Antoni Lasecki

ANTHONY “Anton” LASECKI

Antoni was born 11 May 1866 in Grylewo Parish  (near Wagrowiec and Poznan) Poland. Baptized at St. Catherine’s in Grylewo on the 14th, his godparents were Jan Lemanski and Teofilia Gertych.

He was most likely the last of the 7 children born to Andrej Lasecki (pronounced Wasetski), a farmer, and Francisca Rozmarynowska (40 yrs. old). Thus far, we know of the twins, Joseph and Jozefa Lasecki who were 3 years older, born in the village of Laskownica,  and Mary Anna.eleven years older, born 1855 in Czeszewo, a village north of Grylewo.

When Antoni was 15, he emigrated with his parents, Mary Anna, and an Emilie Lasecki on the ship called the Hermann, leaving from Bremen, Germany. The family arrived in the Port of Baltimore on 19 April 1882.

Between 1882 and 1888, when we find Franciska and Antoni living at 119 Superior St. in Detroit, the Laseckis wereabouts remain a mystery. However, There is an Andreas, and later a Joseph Lasecki in Milwaukee, where the some of the Dychs settled, so I think this is probably where Andreas and his family went after arriving in Baltimore.

Antoni became a naturalized citizen in Detroit in 1890.

He was 23 yrs. old when he married Michalina Dych (24 yrs.old) on 7 Jul 1890 in Sweetest Heart of Mary RC Church, Detroit, MI. The witnesses were August Mens and John Prabowska. The celebrant was the famed Father Kalasinski.

Anthony and Michalina had 8 children. Marie (b. 1891) Walter (b. 1894), Paul, Leo, (b. 1900) Angeline (b. 1902), Stanley (b. 1905), Alec (Anthony jr. b. 1906) and RoseMary (b.1910).

Anthony’s son Paul Lasecki was born 16 Jan 1898. Tragically he died in 1903 from a firecracker accident at the age of 7. He is buried in the Sweetest Heart of Mary Cemetery.

Walter, the eldest, was 16 when his father left in 1910. The youngest child, RoseMary was born the very year he left, on 4 Sep. 1910.

The Detroit City Directory 1894-5 lists Anthony, molder, living at 119 Superior Street. Francisca Lasecki, widow of Andrew, boards at the same address. The same info. Is listed on the 1895-96 directory.

John Lasecki, a mason is listed as well in Detroit on Leland Street. Is this possibly Anthony’s brother or cousin?

Antoni’s last known address was 815 W. Jefferson St, Louisville. He died 12 May 1923 at 7:25 PM from accidental wood alcohol poisoning the day after his 57th  birthday in Louisville, Kentucky. He is buried in the Seventh Street Cemetery, Louisville.

If anyone has a photo of his grave, I’m sure the readers of this blog would love to see a copy, if you can send it to me. OPAH will publish it.

Ditto for any more photos or documents relating to Anthony.
